Prior to 1703 the Society used the arms of Henry de Lacy, Earl of Lincoln, though as early as 1615 Sir George Buck wrote: "But Sir James Lea [Ley] told me there was lately a coat devised for this house viz. Azure, seme de fers de mouline or with a purple Lyon in a canton or" (Stow, " Annales," p. 974).
