Chaperon

Chaperon, Chapourn, or Shafferoon. A term applied to the small shields which contain either the Crest, deaths-head, or other device.

These are placed on the foreheads of thehorses drawing the hearse at funerals, and are so called because they were fastened to the Chaperon, or hood, worn over the heads of the horses, with other state coverings.
